When lure training, what method can discourage carrying of the lure?

Securing the lure to the ground is an effective method to discourage a raptor from carrying the lure. When the lure is fixed, the falcon or hawk is unable to pick it up and fly away with it, thereby preventing the development of a habit where the bird feels inclined to carry it off. This technique helps to teach the bird that the lure is intended for specific training purposes, such as associating it with rewards for returning or landing, rather than as an object to be taken.

In contrast, allowing the raptor to carry the lure for long distances can reinforce the behavior of carrying, making it more likely that the bird will continue to do so in the future. Using a heavier lure might make it physically challenging for the bird to carry, but it does not teach the desired behavior of returning. Training only in enclosed areas can limit the scope and effectiveness of the training, as it does not provide the bird with varied environments that could enhance its learning experience regarding lure recognition and retrieval.
